Snoring and Sleep Apnea Q & A

I snore; does that mean I have sleep apnea?

No. While snoring can be an indication of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), many people may snore without having OSA. If you snore, you'll undergo a thorough evaluation to determine the cause of your snoring before a diagnosis of OSA can be made.

How is sleep apnea diagnosed?

The first step in diagnosing apnea is a complete exam and evaluation of the head and neck, often accompanied by an endoscopic exam to visualize the airway. When apnea is suspected, you may be asked to undergo a sleep exam to confirm the diagnosis and assess the severity of your condition. During the exam, you'll be monitored to be determined how often your breathing stops during the night and for how long. Once these tests are completed, Dr. Purcelli can develop a course of treatment based on your specific needs.

Is apnea dangerous?

Because apnea causes you to stop breathing, clinical studies have linked the condition with an increase in cardiovascular problems including heart attack and stroke. It's also been associated with high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, weight gain, and obesity. And because apnea causes your sleep to be disrupted, it can also cause an increase in car accidents due to excessive grogginess.

What treatments are available for sleep apnea?

The most common treatment for OSA is continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP. This treatment uses a mask to deliver a continual stream of air to help keep your airway open and prevent interruptions in your breathing. Many people who use CPAP report feeling more rested as a result of fewer sleep interruptions. Nasal surgery and surgery on your throat may be appropriate in some cases of obstructive sleep apnea. Dr. Purcelli will help determine which approach is right for you.
