Nasal and Sinus Surgery Q & A

Why is sinus surgery performed?

Nasal and sinus surgery can help treat a wide range of issues, including:

  • Chronic rhinosinusitis (or chronic sinusitis), a condition that causes inflammation and pain in the sinuses that does not resolve with non-surgical approaches

  • Chronic infection of the sinuses

  • Sinus infection complications

  • Nasal polyps (fleshy growths)

  • Persistent and recurrent sinus headaches

  • Full or partial loss of sense of smell

  • Tumor removal

  • Cerebrospinal fluid leakage

  • Obstruction of the nasal lacrimal duct

  • Choanal atresia (blockage of narrowing of the nasal passages)

  • Sinus mucoceles (cysts)

One of the primary purposes of nasal and sinus surgery is to help the nose and sinuses function as they should, including making sure the natural drainage pathway is unimpeded. By opening these pathways, the frequency and duration of infections can be greatly reduced. Sinus surgery is not typically a first choice in the treatment of sinus conditions. Usually, it is performed only after other options like sprays and medications have been tried and have not been successful.

What is sinus surgery like?

The exact procedure will vary depending on your needs, but today's nasal and sinus surgeries tend to be much less invasive than procedures performed a decade or more ago. Most procedures can be performed endoscopically, avoiding large external incisions and prolonged periods of recovery. Endoscopic procedures are performed through the nose, resulting in far less discomfort and much faster recovery with minimal nasal packing to control bleeding.

I have polyps; will sinus surgery cure them?

Most people who develop nasal polyps are predisposed to them, which means they're more likely to develop them throughout their lives. While surgery will remove polyps, it's not uncommon for new ones to form eventually. Surgery should be considered a treatment to help resolve the symptoms of polyps, such as difficulty breathing, rather than a lifelong cure.
